Avalanche

An avalanche is a rapid downslope flow of snow, sometimes mixed with ice, rocks, and debris. In Switzerland, avalanche hazard is mapped by cantonal authorities and the Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF) as part of the natural-hazard cadastre.

What this data measures

Avalanche hazard maps define zones where avalanches have historically occurred or are predicted to occur, usually classified by intensity and frequency.

The dataset is most relevant in mountainous cantons such as Valais, Graubünden, Bern, Uri, Obwald, Nidwald, Ticino, and Glarus.

How to interpret it

Avalanche overlays are most relevant for properties in or near alpine terrain.

A high-hazard zone means the area is exposed to avalanches that could reach buildings during significant winter events.

Alongside protective infrastructure such as deflection walls and galleries, zoning law typically restricts new construction in the highest-hazard areas.
